Anche oggi, come ogni primo lunedì del mese, il comitato direttivo dell'Istituto Culturale Argentino-Ligure si riunisce in una saletta della pizzeria Guerrin su Corrientes. Seduto al tavolo con alcuni soci il presidente Flavio Perazzo irradia energia. Propone iniziative, smista incarichi e distribuisce tra i presenti cartine geografiche della Liguria e copie del Secolo XIX. L'intervista ha luogo al termine della riunione, davanti a una pizza gigantesca e un bicchiere di birra argentina.
 L'Istituto Culturale Argentino-Ligure è sicuramente unico nel suo genere a Buenos Aires. Qual è l'origine di una delle poche associazioni italiane in Argentina che non ha carattere religioso nè mutualista?
E' vero che le associazioni esistenti prima dell'ICAL si ispiravano a principi religiosi o al mutualismo, ed è proprio questa la causa del declino di molte di loro. Mentre con il Peronismo la ragione mutuale scomparve perchè sostituita dall'assistenza dello stato, l'afflato religioso dei vecchi immigrati si andò affievolendo. Dato che i giovani stavano perdendo l'interesse per la cultura dei padri, il rischio era che scomparissero completamente le rappresentanze liguri in Argentina. Con la professoressa Luciana Berisso, un'altra chiavarese come me, decidemmo di fondare un'associazione che spiegasse la cultura ligure alle nuove generazioni, quelle dei figli degli immigrati. L'istituto si inaugurò il 21 ottobre 1986, con la firma del presidente della Regione Rinaldo Magnani. All'inizio eravamo in pochi, pensi che le riunioni si tenevano nella cucina della professoressa Berisso! Fortunatamente l'Istituto é cresciuto molto, ed é cresciuto in fretta, grazie anche all'appoggio dell'amministrazione regionale e provinciale di Genova.
Quali sono le attività principali dell'ICAL?
In primo luogo va detto che l'Istituto possiede la più grande biblioteca ligustica del Sud America, con circa mille volumi e duemila videocassette. L'abbiamo allestita poco a poco, scrivendo tantissime lettere a editori e associazioni culturali liguri. Molti ci mandarono materiali e pubblicazioni in regalo. Ora, grazie al cielo, abbiamo un nostro gruzzoletto e i libri siamo in grado di comprarceli. Comunque continuiamo a ricevere riviste da circa sessanta associazioni liguri. Il nostro sogno è quello di poter ricevere una pubblicazione e una videocassetta da ciascun comune ligure, anche da quelli più piccoli. Buona parte dell'immigrazione ligure a Buenos Aires proviene da comunità montane microscopiche, e anche i discendenti di questa gente hanno diritto a conoscere le loro radici
 A proposito di radici: mi risulta che l'Istituto conduca anche ricerche genealogiche.
Certo! Anzi: questa è una delle nostre attività principali. Siamo in contatto con più di mille parrocchie liguri, e riceviamo periodicamente gli elenchi telefonici aggiornati di tutta la regione. Abbiamo aiutato moltissimi discendenti di liguri a scoprire l'origine dei loro antenati. Molti di loro sono tornati in Italia per ritrovare i luoghi descritti dai loro genitori o dai loro nonni. In realtà, l'istituto è una scintilla per promuovere il discorso sulle radici.
Quanti sono i Liguri a Buenos Aires-è possibile azzardare una cifra?
Basta studiare l'elenco telefonico per rendersi conto che a Buenos Aires ci sono circa 200.000 o 300.000 liguri e discendenti di liguri. Per questo abbiamo scelto come simbolo il logotipo della Regione Liguria-permettendoci, però, di aggiungere una quinta stellina: una quinta provincia, cioè la nostra. A dire il vero, numericamente dovremmo essere la seconda provincia! Si figuri che ci sono più Sanguineti qui a Buenos Aires che in tutta Genova!
Quali sono i progetti per il futuro immediato dell'Istituto?
In primo luogo, stiamo per lanciare una rubrica tutta nostra su La Voce d'Italia, un importante giornale italiano di Buenos Aires. Si intitolerà "La Lanterna", e sarà lo spunto per creare un rapporto interattivo tra i lettori e l'Istituto. Ovviamente la settimana prossima saremo presenti con una nostra vetrina alla Feria del Libro. Pensi che siamo l'unica associazione italiana a esporre! Inoltre stiamo per compiere un passo importantissimo: siamo in procinto di comprare un computer con un modem che ci permetterà di intensificare ulteriormente i contatti con la Liguria. Come vede non solo l'Istituto non si ferma, ma continua a adeguarsi ai tempi e ad esplorare nuove strategie di comunicazione per mantenere vivo il legame tra i liguri d'Argentina e la terra d'origine.




The Istituto Culturale Argentino-Ligure of Buenos Aires: An Interview with Flavio Perazzo

Tonight, like every first Monday of the month, the Istituto Culturale Argentino-Ligure is meeting in the Pizzeria Guerrin on Avenida Corrientes. Flavio Perazzo, the president of the association, is sitting at the table with a few members. Active as ever, he proposes activities, assigns tasks, and distributes maps of Liguria as well as issues of the Genoese newspaper Secolo XIX. The interview takes place after the meeting, and it is made more enjoyable by a huge pizza and a glass of Argentine beer.
The Istituto Culturale Argentino-Ligure is certainly one of its own in Buenos Aires. What is the origin of one of the few Italian associations whose purpose is neither religion nor mutual welfare?
You are right: the older associations were inspired by either religion or mutual welfare. This is exactly why many of them declined. Peron made many of them obsolete with his public welfare system, and older immigrants did not manage to transmit their religiosity to the younger generations. Since the latter were losing interest in their parents' culture, the Ligurian associations of Argentina were at risk of disappearing. Therefore, Professor Luciana Berisso and I decided to create an association that would propagate Ligurian culture to the new generations, those of the children of the immigrants. The Institute was founded on October 21, 1986, and it was ratified by Rinaldo Magnani, the president of the Regione Liguria. In the beginning there were only few of us: we used to hold our meetings in the kitchen of Prof. Berisso! Luckily the Institute grew fast, also thanks to the support we got from the administrations of the Regione Liguria and the Provincia di Genova.
What are the main activities of the ICAL?
First of all let me tell you that the Institute owns the biggest Ligurian library of South America. We have about a thousand books and two thousand videotapes. We created this library little by little, by writing a lot of letters to publishers and Ligurian cultural associations. Many sent us free books and magazines. Now, thank God, we have a little bit of money and we can buy the books we need. Anyway we keep receiving magazines from about sixty Ligurian associations. Our dream is that of receiving a publication and a videotape from each Ligurian town and village, even the smallest ones. In fact, part of the Ligurian immigration to Buenos Aires originated from tiny villages, and the descendents of these people have a right to know their roots, too….
Talking about roots: as far as I know the Institute does genealogical research, too.
Sure! In fact this is one of our main goals. We are in touch with over a thousand Ligurian churches, and we receive updated telephone books for the entire region. We helped lots of second and third generation Ligurians to find out about their origins. Many of them even went back to Italy to find the places their parents and grandparents used to tell them about. The Institute is very active in promoting the discourse of roots!
I wonder how many Ligurians are there in Buenos Aires-what is your estimate?
If you take a look at the telephone book you'll realize that there are about 200,000 to 300,000 Ligurians in Buenos Aires. This is why we chose as our flag the symbol of the Regione Liguria-but we added a fifth star: a fifth province, that is ours. To tell you the truth, in terms of numbers we should be the second province! Believe it or not, there are more Sanguineti here in Buenos Aires than back in Genova!
What are the plans for the future of the Institute?
First of all, we are about to start a column in La Voce d'Italia, an important Italian newspaper in Buenos Aires. Its title will be "La Lanterna", and it is meant to induce the readers to interact with the Institute. Obviously next week we will participate in Buenos Aires' Book Fair with a small exhibition of our own. We will be the only Italian association there! Besides, we are just about to make an important progress: we are going to buy a computer with a modem that will allow us to further intensify the contact with Liguria. As you can see, the Institute keeps up with the newest communicational strategies to invigorate the connection between the motherland and us, Ligurians of Argentina.
